What the Reindeer Know: Herd Movement as a Weather Forecast
About the thesis
Herders have always read the weather off their animals. The thesis puts collars on three hundred reindeer and finds that the herd turns toward shelter eleven hours before a storm, earlier than the station’s forecast, and that the signal is in the spacing of the animals rather than their direction. A forecast built from it is tested against a winter.
